Nine lives?

Posted on November 25, 2015. Filed under: My Lemon Recipes |

I can count the times I was aware my life had been spared.

This is one of them.

I was 19.  Got an invite to go white water rafting on the Lehigh River. The day of the trip , it rained. It was also the last dam release of the season. It ended up being class 3 and class 4 Rapids.

I cannot swim. I fell out of the raft. I screamed bloody murder. My compadre attempted to pull me out of the water, but succeeded in pulling off my life jacket. I screamed beyond bloody murder. I never knew that my fingertips could penetrate River Rock, because that is all I had to cling to. My other compadre finally got me back into the raft. I lost my father’s hat, my lunch for the day, and a bit of my pride.

Not all bad, I’m here today to tell the story!

Anniversaries, Our story part 3

Posted on July 24, 2015. Filed under: My Lemon Recipes |

One more post to go!

I’ll keep this brief.  Today is our NYC marriage anniversary.   We celebrate several.   Every 18th of the month.  December 25th we got committed.  June 30th we got civilized. July 24th we were one of the first couples to get married in NYC.  You learn, hopefully,  to celebrate the important moments.   You learn to appreciate the challenges. You believe in each other.

See you next week.

Surprises, Our story part 2

Posted on July 18, 2015. Filed under: My Lemon Recipes |

At the kitchen table this afternoon:

Jann: So, am I a stalker?
Me: Absolutely.  I say it all the time.
Jann: No, I’m determined.

I’ve never had a clearly defined “type” that I’m attracted to.  I didn’t date until well after high school.  I gravitated towards athletes, mostly because it was common ground, male and female.  As time went on, I noticed two things.  I was attracted to people who could hold conversation on a wide range of topics, and I seemed to have a different level of intensity based on gender.  Any other factors were a mixed bag.  Black, White, British, Argentinean,  redhead, blonde, Hindu, Jewish, cougar, babycakes, tall, petite. With my short attention span, could you keep my interest?

I finally got the courage to call.   I looked at her picture. Why was I so afraid? Enough of this! I dialed her number and prepared my voice to be as high pitched and upbeat as possible. I heard voice on the other line say hello. In my brightest bubbly voice  I said hello and that I was glad to finally get to speak to her.  Janet responded that it was notna good time to talk and that I’d have to call later.  She abruptly hung up the phone on me.

(Insert appropriate curse words)

To say I felt dejected and rejected would be an understatement.   I seemed to have built myself up for nothing.  After enduring so much pain, I didn’t want to be hurt anymore, but that’s not realistic.   I was still attending a backbiting church and my ex was my roommate.  Within that year I lost my beloved grandmother and my best friend, my dad.  Being lonely is a beast all its own. I quietly cried.

The phone rang.  The number was blocked, but I picked up anyway.  It was Janet!

She apologized for not being able to talk.  I spoke softly, trying to mask my emotional state.  As the conversation went on, it felt like I was reconnecting with a childhood friend.  She was an 80’s kid like me. We sang songs.  We talked about movies.  We liked similar foods.  The list went on.  Finally, we had to hang up and noticed our first call lasted 3 hours!  She held my attention and I couldn’t remember the last time I was that happy.  She was on the other side of the world, but I’ve never had anyone captivate my heart like her.

This is why the 18th of every month is so special.   Tonight, we are celebrating 131 months of connection.  That 10 yrs and 11 months.

The reason she initially hung up? She thought I was a man! Asian women are not known for deep, resonate voices. You can read part 3 of this story July 24.

3 days, Our story part 1

Posted on July 15, 2015. Filed under: My Lemon Recipes |

11 years ago today, I received an invitation that frightened me. I guess I should give some background.
image

In 2003, I was in a relationship. During a women’s Bible study meeting, my then partner made an announcement to the group and to me. She stated, ” I’m no longer gay”.   Well, I was shocked, but absolutely unprepared for what occurred next. The women in bible study jumped up from their seats and ran to my now former partner. They threw their arms around her and congratulated her, one sitting next to me stated that she was glad my former partner was out from that lifestyle.

I found out later that the church ladies had been secretly taking my former partner out on dates after church services, while we were still a couple.

I gave myself a year to heal.

After a year of spiritual healing and growth, I felt it was time to reconnect. I went to a personal site and put up my ad, looking for friends.  I received a response, however without a paid membership, I had no way to interact with this person. I was so curious about her. I kept asking why someone from the Philippines would want to contact me. I tried to circumvent the system, which was disastrous. Finally I made a leap of faith. I took a look at my limited financial resources (retired, on temporary disability), and bought a membership.

We started corresponding immediately. What a breath of fresh air this new person was! I would never have dreamed that someone on the other side of the world would have so much in common with me. I looked forward to our emails and little messages. Things were going great until July 15 2004. That’s the day that this wonderful new person emailed her phone number and asked me to call her.

I’ve been bitten, stabbed, a chair broken over my back, a stick broken over my head. For 3 days, I was petrified to pick up the phone and call. Why???

I’ll see you on July 18.  3 days from now.

I remember listening to Blades before seeing him act.  A racy song for a child to hear, but one of my all time favorites.
